Big Buddy Troubleshooting

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
Piezo igniter does not produce spark 1 Spark electrode positioned wrong Adjust spark gap and/or replace pilot assembly
2 Igniter cable not connected to spark electrode Connect cable to spark electrode
3 Spark electrode broken Replace pilot assembly
4 Piezo igniter defective Replace control valve
Piezo igniter produces spark at the electrode, but no pilot ignition 1 Gas supply turned off Check that propane tank has fuel
Open valve if using remote tank
2 Control knob not in PILOT position Turn control knob to PILOT position
3 Control knob not depressed while in PILOT position Depress control knob while in PILOT position
4 Pilot tube is blocked Clean pilot tube using q-tip with alcohol
Run 2" to bottom of pilot tube & twist around
Blow out tube with 30 psi or less
5 Control knob is stripped Remove knob and verify D shaped flat that mates to control valve stem is not stripped or cracked; If bad, replace knob
6 Regulator defective Replace regulator
Pilot lights but flame goes out immediately when control knob is released 1 Control knob not depressed long enough After pilot is lit, keep control knob depressed for 30-60 seconds
2 Pilot flame not touching thermocouple Clean pilot tube using q-tip with alcohol
Run 2" to bottom of pilot tube & twist around
Blow out tube with 30 psi or less
3 Thermocouple connection loose at control valve Hand tight until snug, then 1/4 turn with wrench
4 Tip switch connections broken or disconnected Clean electrical contacts at control valve
Reconnect tip switch wires
5 Control knob is stripped Remove knob and verify 2 flats that mate to control valve stem are not stripped
If stripped, replace knob
6 Defective thermocouple Replace pilot assembly
7 Defective tip switch Replace tip switch
8 Defective control valve Replace control valve
Pilot lights but flame goes out gradually when control knob is released 1 Control knob not depressed long enough After pilot is lit, keep control knob depressed for 30-60 seconds
2 Pilot flame not touching thermocouple Clean pilot tube using q-tip with alcohol
Run 2" to bottom of pilot tube & twist around
Blow out tube with 30 psi or less
3 Thermocouple connection loose at control valve Hand tight until snug, then 1/4 turn with wrench
4 Inlet gas pressure too low Check/replace gas cylinder supply
5 Defective regulator Replace regulator
Burner does not light after pilot is lit but pilot flame stays on 1 Main burner orifice is blocked/clogged Remove back cover & lower baffle to expose burner assembly;
Remove and clean main burner orifice with clean cloth or q-tip with alcohol
2 Venturi tube is blocked Remove back cover & lower baffle to expose burner assembly; Use wire to swirl around and than blow out tube running up back of burners
3 Inlet gas pressure is too low Check/replace gas cylinder supply source
4 Control knob set between HI & LOW positions Turn control knob until it lines up with desired setting
5 Control knob is stripped Remove knob and verify D shaped flat that mates to control valve stem is not stripped or cracked; If bad, replace knob
6 Defective ceramic plate Replace ceramic burner
7 Defective regulator Replace regulator
Heater shuts off during operation 1 Not enough fresh air available Provide ventilation per owner's manual
2 Inlet gas pressure is too low Check/replace gas cylinder supple source
3 Pilot tube has become blocked/clogged Clean pilot tube using q-tip with alcohol
Run 2" to bottom of pilot tube & twist around
Blow out tube with 30 psi or less
4 Tip switch has been activated due to bumping or moving Level heater and re-light
5 Oil contamination due to improper shutdown Complete disassembly & cleaning of fuel lines with soap & water. Replace control valve & regulator. Purge supply hose. See owner's manual for proper shutdown when using remote tank.
